3.4 Artificial Neural Network

ANN is an artificial representation that attempts to simulate the biological neural systems of the human brain. Generally, an ANN is an interconnected group of a large number of processing nodes called artificial neuron [18]. As a family of pattern recognition algorithms, the ANN is characterized by its ability to learn by lots of examples, which make it suitable for cancer predicting using gene expression. Different architectures of ANN exist, the most commonly used, the multilayer perceptron (MLP). In the MLP architecture, the neurons (nodes) are arranged in at least three layers: an input layer, a hidden one, and an output one (Fig. 3). Except for the neurons in the input layer, each neuron uses a nonlinear activation function (usually logistic).
